worth
worth很多词典将其解释为介词,名词和形容词,牛津词典虽然没将其归为介词,但也说明了其用法和介词一样:
(used like a preposition, followed by a noun, pronoun or number, or by the -ing form of a verb 用法同介词,后接名词、代词、数字或动词的 -ing 形式): ![]() 常用的词组如: worth one's while 值得花时间做某事 worth spending time on You have to wait in line for about an hour, but it will be worth your while. 你需要排队一个小时,但是它值得你等待这些时间。 而复合形容词worthwhile表达的意思也差不多,表示值得花时间(金钱,努力)做的,即重要的,有意义的。 Reading this book will be worthwhile, trust me. = Reading this book will be worth our while. worth还可以当名词,表示价值,如:He bought himself fifty pence worth of trouble. 再如:get one's money's worth 钱花得值to receive good value for what is paid for If we pay this much for dinner, we’d better get our money’s worth. 如果我们需要花这么多钱去吃这顿晚饭的话,我们最好花得值一点。 waste
(钱,时间)花得值可以用worth表达,如果不值了?最直接的表达就是用waste, 如短语a waste of time/money 浪费时间/金钱。
I think these kinds of events are just a waste of time. 我认为这些事都是浪费时间。 My dad thinks going to the doctor is a waste of time. 我的爸爸认为去看病很浪费时间。 People decried the campaign as a waste of money. 人们谴责这一活动是浪费金钱。 worthyy为形容词后缀,通常为名词+y变形容词(如friend+y).worthy表示为:值得(应得)...的,或者值得...关注(尊敬)的。有worth(价值)才会值得关注尊敬嘛。 因为表达事物本身的特征,这个词通常和of连用:
A number of the report's findings are worthy of note.
这份报告里有些调查结果值得注意。
He gave a speech that was worthy of Martin Luther King.
他作了一次典型的马丁 ∙ 路德 ∙ 金式的演讲(他的演讲具有马丁 ∙ 路德 ∙ 金式的特征/价值)。
当然也可以修饰名词: a worthy member of the team 一位优秀的球员。 甚至构成了一些复合词: trustworthy. roadworthy. 习题: Q1. Watching movies on small screens is not ____ . A: worth my will B: worth my moment C: worth my while D: worthy my while Q2. Watching the new movie was ____ . A: a waste of minutes B: a waste of day C: a waste of time D: a waste of mind Q3.
